Mercedes-AMG ONE Sets New Lap Record at Nürburgring
3.652 Seconds. That's the difference between the new 20.832 kilometre lap record set by racing driver Maro Engel driving a Mercedes-AMG ONE and the previous record holder, Lars Kern driving a Porsche 911 GT2 RS MR.
Engel attained an officially measured and notarised time of 6:35.183 minutes on 28 October 2022 versus Kern's record of 6:38.835 minutes on 14 June 2021. Porche's most recent attempt set by Jörg Bergmeister on 5 October 2022 attained a lap time of 6:49.328 minutes driving a 911 GT3 RS.
The Mercedes-AMG ONE achievement sets a new record, not only for road-legal production vehicles, but also in the super sports car category.
Engel's new record also beats his previous attempts of 6:43.616 minutes driving a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series in November 2020 and 7:04.632 minutes driving a Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro in November 2018.
This is a remarkable achievement for Mercedes-Benz considering that competitors in the road-legal super car category, such as Ferrari and McClaren, have yet to attain an under-seven minute lap time at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit. Lamborghini only just eclipsed the 7-minute barrier with a lap time of 6:59.73 minutes in an Aventador SuperVeloce LP750-4 driven by Marco Mapelli in May 2015.
According to a Mercedes-Benz press release, the record-breaking vehicle, described as 'the hypercar with Formula 1™ hybrid-drive technology', had everything that the Mercedes-AMG ONE offers as standard.
With one combustion engine and four electric motors, the E PERFORMANCE hybrid delivers a total of 782 kW, with the top speed capped at 352 km/h.
First car manufacturer with a hypercar on the Ring
Mercedes further claims that it is the first car manufacturer to have ventured onto the Nürburgring Nordschleife with such a hypercar and set official records there. "The Mercedes-AMG ONE is therefore not only the absolute fastest road-legal vehicle on the Nordschleife, but also number 1 in the Nürburgring super sports car category", says the press release.
